Bighorn River Information
The Bighorn River is a river unlike any other. It is hard to say oh it’s just another tailwater or it’s just another spring creek or it’s a big water trout fishery. But it is really a combination of all three. We have very tailwater like conditions as far as consistent flows and temperatures. We have very spring creek like conditions in terms of our high numbers of scuds, sowbugs, and aquatic worms along with extremely clear conditions. At an average flow of 3,000 cfs it is a big river and somewhat daunting to someone that has only fished smaller creeks and rivers.
The Bighorn River has something for everyone though and suits all levels of fly fishermen to those that are new to nymphing and enjoy the success of finding the right depth, pattern, and placement of the flies. As well as a dry fly purist that enjoys spending his days watching heads poke up above the surface taking delicate midges or big splashy takes on hoppers in the summer.
Streamer fishing on the Bighorn River is also productive year round but peaks in the early spring and late fall when water temperatures have trout at their most active.
